I am so excited to welcome a brand new Guest Blogger to our Wellness Wednesdays newsletter this week. Shireen Mirshak is not only a holistic nutritionist (like me!), but she is also currently studying to be a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner and Fertility Awareness Educator. Oh baby!

Whether starting a family is in your future or not (you do you!), Mother’s Day is just around the corner and Shireen’s advice of turning inward to discover what you need is an approach that benefits us all. Take it away Shireen.

lineEating for Fertility

If you are trying to conceive then chances are you have fallen down the rabbit hole at least once researching about what you could or “should” be doing differently.

Whether you’ve been trying for a while or are thinking of starting a family in the near or distant future, it is always a good idea to take a look at your eating habits and see if there is anything that could be adjusted.

The good news is that if you are having this conversation with yourself chances are you are already doing the right things (or at least you KNOW what the right things are). These are not specific to conception, these are practices that make for healthy eating at ALL stages of life.

There is so much conflicting information out there about what to eat if you are trying to conceive (let alone once you DO get pregnant – don’t get me started!), it is important to step back for a moment and give your body the opportunity to be heard.

We don’t need a blog post to tell us what to eat – we just need to listen inward because we already know what we need.

Throughout our menstrual cycles what our bodies yearn for may change as different hormones come out to play and our energy ebbs and flows. More greens after menstruation, lighter meals around ovulation, more cooked comfort foods before and during menstruation. Does that sound familiar? Or maybe you have never thought to pay attention. Your pattern may be different than this but the point is to listen in, see for yourself, and honour what you find.

There are plenty of blog posts out there boasting which superfoods will help you make a baby but Honey, it’s not worth your energy. This seems like a strange thing to say IN a blog post about eating for fertility, but too often we get stuck looking for the answers outside ourselves expecting to find a quick fix or an easy answer. Be patient with yourself, move slowly, and you will figure it out.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There has been a lot of research done showing what nutrients help support the reproductive system and if you have been trying to conceive for a while then I recommend finding a holistic practitioner to support you in finding out what foods may be helpful to you in your scenario. Just remember, there is no “perfect diet” for everyone.

So I will leave you with this:

If we can be mindful of the choices we make, be kind to our bodies AND our minds (yes, negative self-talk is just as taxing), if we can put our bodies first, eat wholesome and regularly spaced meals, drink plenty of water, REST, PLAY, and CREATE in other forms. These will do far greater for our souls and reproductive beings than researching the “Top 5 Foods for Fertility”.
