On a recent commute home, I was listening to Food Psych, my favorite podcast that’s dedicated to helping people make peace with food and their bodies. The host, Christy Harrison, referred to dieting (or the act of changing your eating and exercise habits in an effort to lose weight), as a “Life Thief”. Cue – lightbulb moment!!

As I devoured her well-written and researched article on the subject – my heart broke. I thought of my own history with dieting and how much of my life I put on hold until I reached an arbitrary weight.

My heart ached – remembering the relentless anxiety and guilt I felt around my food choices. And my heart filled with frustration – realizing how much these preoccupying thoughts kept me disconnected and from truly living in my life.

I was suffering from the harmful effects of diet culture, unknowingly.

If you spend too much of your time worrying about your body, food, and weight, know this: it’s not your fault. You have not failed the Whole30, clean eating plan, elimination diet or detox. The diets have failed you.

Don’t waste another one of your life minutes believing you are broken. Today, I urge you to read the Life Thief – and discover that you are not alone in your despairing diet-binge cycle struggle.
