Being mean to myself won’t help me feel better.

You might be thinking – DUH, Claire! AND YET, when I’m in the throes of a struggle, being kind to myself doesn’t seem so obvious. And I know for so many of my beloved clients, they believe being mean to themselves is motivating. Can you relate?

If so, let’s take a moment to remind ourselves what self-compassion is and why it’s so important.

Self-compassion, as defined by Kristen Neff, is “Instead of just ignoring your pain with a “stiff upper lip” mentality, you stop to tell yourself “this is really difficult right now,” how can I comfort and care for myself in this moment?” You can read her full definition here.

And why is it so important? Well, I recently heard this quote and it really brought home why kind self-talk is the path to positive change:

Looking at our struggles with kindness and curiosity allows us to loosen our grip, and see what is really going on, and identify opportunities to do things differently. –Evelyn Tribole

So, if your self-talk needs some improvement, know that you’re not alone. You might start making some shifts by scrolling through the resources I’ve put together below.

And the next time you’re compelled to “motivate” yourself with meanness, call upon the language you’d use with a loved one. Start there, practice using that kindness on yourself and see what happens…
